What are space maintainer?
Ventura space maintainers are oral appliances that hold the space left behind by a lost baby tooth. Your child’s baby teeth serve as placeholders until their adult teeth are developed and ready to grow in.
Types of Space Maintainers
We recommend space maintainers when your child has lost a baby tooth due to cavities or infection and their adult tooth is not close to growing in. There are two main types of space maintainers in Ventura that we use:
Fixed Space Maintainers
A fixed space maintainer remains in place until your child’s adult tooth is ready to grow in. There are multiple options for fixed space maintainers. Band-and-loop or crown-and-loop space maintainers place a band or a crown over your child’s adjacent tooth and use a stainless-steel wire loop to hold the space for the adult tooth. Distal shoe space maintainers are only used for permanent first molars. We insert this space maintainer into your child’s gum line to help guide the permanent molar into the proper position. Lingual space maintainers are used to hold space for multiple baby teeth. This space maintainer is cemented to your child’s molars and connected to their front teeth using a metal wire.
Removable Space Maintainers
Your child can remove this type of space maintainer to brush and floss their teeth. The space maintainer may fill in the space with an artificial tooth.
How does a space maintainer improve your child’s oral health?
Without the baby tooth to hold the space, your child’s other teeth can shift, causing your child’s adult teeth to come in crooked or even preventing their permanent teeth from growing in. Crooked teeth are harder to keep clean, increasing your child’s risk of tooth decay and cavities.
A permanent tooth that’s unable to grow in is impacted; impacted teeth can cause pain, damage to the surrounding teeth, tooth decay, gum disease, and infection. Shifting teeth may also lead to bite problems that cause uneven wear and tear that can damage your child’s teeth.
What are the benefits of using a space maintainer?
Space maintainers have several benefits:
Help your child speak and eat properly
Your child’s baby teeth allow them to eat and speak correctly. When their baby teeth shift or their teeth come in crooked, this affects their ability to properly form specific sounds, potentially causing a speech impediment. They may also struggle to bite and chew certain foods.
Prevents the need for future orthodontic treatment
By using space maintainers in Ventura to encourage your child’s adult tooth to grow into the mouth properly, you reduce your child’s chances of needing orthodontic treatment to correct crooked teeth, spacing issues, and bite problems.
Comfortable for your child to wear
While your child may need a few days to get used to their space maintainer, most children find space maintainers comfortable and pain-free.

TREATMENT
When your child loses a baby tooth before the adult tooth is ready to grow in, their teeth can shift and prevent the adult tooth from properly growing in. Space maintainers in Ventura ensure that your child’s mouth has adequate space for the adult tooth.
